While other sectors were hitting the reset button during the bleak holiday season, the video game industry rang up a 9% increase in U.S. sales during December, NPD Group said today. The gain was led by a 15% uptick in sales of software including Call of Duty: World at War, Wii Fit, Mario Kart and Guitar Hero World Tour. For 2008, sales of games, consoles and accessories grew 19% to $21.33 billion from $17.98 billion in 2007.
The relatively rosy numbers are a stark contrast to the layoffs and studio closures made last year by THQ and Electronic Arts, two of the biggest players in the industry. "This is not a case of the rising tide lifting all boats," said Anita Frazier, an analyst at NPD Group.Among the winners were Nintendo, whose Wii and DS consoles continue to run out of stock in stores, and Activision Blizzard, a Santa Monica company whose big bets on the Guitar Hero and Call of Duty franchises have paid off handsomely.
Nintendo's biggest challenge to further market expansion is the remaining "consumer indifferent to games," says Nintendo Korea's chief executive -- who doesn't consider Microsoft and Sony to be direct rivals.

Sega USA has re-registered ChuChu Rocket on December 22, 2008. This looks as if Sega is secretly working on reviving ChuChu rocket as an online enabled XBox live Arcade game.
This year lots of Dreamcast titles have been registered with Sega like Sonic Shuffle, Cosmic Smash, Jet Grind Radio and Virtual-On Oratorio Tan gram. In protecting so many game names, Sega has to spend a decent amount of money as registering trademarks costs quite a lot of money. The previous trademark of ChuChu Rocket has not even expired. It is a bit confusing why Sega is spending so much of money to protect such names. It seems as if Sega will pull Nintendo with a “New Play Control” series.
Ubisoft has come back with an adventure game on the Wii and DS in March 2009.The company has confirmed in a press release about bringing back Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templar, the first in adventurous game series. The game has showed up on Nintendo’s massive list of Q1 games and the release is confirmed.
Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars has been ported to a number of platforms since its release in 1996 on the PlayStation and GBA. The latest version has been described as “The Director’s Cut” by Ubisoft and promises a new series which is interwoven with the first story. The games decade old graphics have also been retouched and gives a fresh look.
It’s finally time for making Guitar Hero: Metallica official as the game has come out with its first trailer. The band itself has been talking about the game and it’s been in the Game Informer also. This trailer has not been published by Activision but it has been posted on the band’s website.
The trailer promises the bands “fiercest songs” which indicates “tunes from the first 5 albums.” The video would also be something great to watch. The video has Hetfield which looks like a mutant in the game and the trailer has various angles of lens projection to suit the game.
